This campaign timeline template gives dungeon masters a running log of a tabletop adventure, organized into three phases: the party forms, ventures into the wilds, and faces the reckoning. Each session is an event linked to the party, locations, and the quest it advances.

It works for D&D, Pathfinder, or any TTRPG — and because events carry cause-and-effect links, you can see how one session's choices set up the next.

What's inside this template

5 events across 3 eras, ready to edit.

The Gathering

The party forms and the hook is set.

  • Session 1 — Campaign Begins Session
Where did the party meet, and what brought them together? Describe the hook — the rumor, the job board notice, or the stranger at the tavern who started it all.
  • First Encounter Combat
The party's first real test. Who or what did they fight, what went wrong, and what loot or lead did they walk away with?
  • The Villain Revealed Discovery
The BBEG makes their presence known — through a minion, a threat, or a devastating act. What did the party learn about the threat they're really facing?

Into the Wilds

The party ventures out and faces early dangers.

  • Dungeon Delve Exploration
Describe the dungeon: its layout, traps, guardians, and what the party was searching for. What did they find, and what did it cost them?

The Reckoning

The villain's plan comes into focus and conflict escalates.

  • Final Confrontation Climax
The showdown. How did it unfold, who almost didn't make it, and how was the villain defeated — or not? What changed in the world because of this session?
