Deep worldbuilding produces a lot of history — creation myths, empires, plagues, treaties, and the slow rise and fall of factions. Without a timeline, that lore lives in disconnected documents and contradicts itself over time. A worldbuilding timeline pulls everything into one chronological view so you can see the shape of the world, not just the pile of facts.
Add events for everything that matters: the founding of a kingdom, a war's beginning and end, a ruler's reign, a technological breakthrough. Use date ranges for anything that spans years. Use colored era bands to mark the great ages of your world.
Worlds are made of relationships. Create a reusable entity for a character, location, or faction once, then attach it to every event it touches. No copying and pasting names across twelve documents. When you filter by that entity, the timeline shows only the events it appears in — its entire arc in one unbroken thread.
The best worldbuilding is causal. A drought causes a migration. A migration foreshadows a border war. A dynasty's fall is the consequence of a single assassination. Link events by relationship and the history of your world stops being trivia and becomes a chain readers — and you — can follow.
Continuity checks flag the moment your dates contradict a dependency, so a thousand years of cause and effect stays internally consistent.

Define your own calendar with custom era names and year numbering. "The Long Winter, Year 44" sorts and spaces correctly — no gymnastics to make invented dates work.
However your world is organized, one of these starting shapes will get you there faster than a blank page.
